Soup Kitchens
The Soup Kitchen Program serves meals at both Cass Community Social Services and Pontiac Baldwin Center. The events are run six times a year and those interested can find sign-up sheets at church two weeks prior to the meal. Volunteers of all ages are needed to help shop, prepare and serve food. All ages are welcome to help prepare and serve meals at both the Detroit Cass Community and the Pontiac Baldwin Avenue soup kitchens. From its early beginnings the Soup Kitchen has filled a need. "The Soup Kitchen program at PFUMC was started over 20 years ago by a gentleman named Ted Kuhns," said Dave Lehmer. "Ted helped with the administration until his passing. He saw a need and acted on it." "You realize how fortunate you are when you see the people, especially the children" said Sharon Walk, Soup Kitchen Ambassador. "When you see a mother walking in the door with her four children, and you know they have been living in a car, it makes you grateful for what you have." Getting involved is easy. Sharon and her husband, Jim Walk, helped at the soup kitchen one weekend four years ago and were hooked. "We were unhappy with our current church and our friends invited us to Sunday Services and some special programs like the Soup Kitchen at PFUMC," said Walk. "We really loved it. That was several years ago and we have been working, shopping and preparing meals ever since." Busy schedules and work won't stand in your way of helping the less fortunate. "It is a program that is run on the weekends so even if you work full time during the week, it was easy to fit one weekend in," said Walk. Dave and Kim Lehmer succeeded Ted as Co-Coordinators and assumed responsibility of the Soup Kitchen program through 2006. With their increased involvement in The Appalachia Service Project, they have passed on administrative responsibility to Joseph Cirino. "We have a few regulars who help out all they can," said Dave Lehmer. "Often whole families with kids as young as eight. It's at least a 6-hour commitment. Those students who would like to help can also receive Community Service points." You can help by calling Joseph Cirino at 734-255-7845, or e-mail at joseph@cirino.net or stop in to the PFUMC office. 2008 Schedule January 12th CASS March 8th CASS June 7th BALDWIN July 20th BALDWIN September 14th BALDWIN October 18th CASS |
